Proteins are the most important component for building the body mass of fish. In their growth phase omnivorous fish such as tilapia and common carp need 25-35% protein in their diet, while carnivorous fish need up to 45% protein to grow to optimal levels.

In general, the more fish are in the juvenile stages the more they require a protein-rich diet.
